Mighty Chan unloads to win Men’s World Title
By Randy Starkman
MOSCOW—A trip to the Bolshoi Ballet is up next for Patrick Chan.
Undoubtedly, it’ll be nice to let someone else put on a show for a change.
But the dancers will be hard pressed to match the artistic and athletic demonstration Chan used to obliterate two more world records and capture his first gold medal Friday at the world figure skating championships.
The big Harry Potter devotee made the rest of the field look like muggles in winning by more than 22 points over runner-up Takahiko Kozuka of Japan — the figure skating equivalent of four touchdowns.
Well, Chan has stated his intentions to dominate his sport on the order of Roger Federer or Tiger Woods and this was certainly a good start for the 20-year-old from Toronto.
“It’s surreal,” he said. “It’s honestly surreal.”

‘“I’m a very feeling skater,” he said. “If my body doesn’t feel right, if it’s a little sore, I feel groggy, I don’t feel like my legs are firing very well, I would kind of just stop the day. I would think, ‘I’m not going to be able to skate today. It’s a bad day already.’ But this year it’s become, ‘I can skate in every situation.’ If I don’t feel 100 per cent, it doesn’t matter, I can figure my way out, I can find my centre.”’
I’m so happy to hear this. He’s really matured as a skater (and, I believe, as a person) in the past year, and it really shows.
